A few years ago I went in search for the best scoped rifle cases to fit my two long range rifles. The scopes have 52m objective lenses which make the job that much more challenging.  I spent hours carefully researching each product that seemed to be what I was looking for. After ordering, I ended up having to return four of them because of inaccurate or insufficient information.  Eventually, I found the best cases for my own requirements

I learned that finding the best case to fit your rifle can be a frustrating and time-consuming undertaking.  More often than not companies do not provide the important details in their description you should know.  Information such as dimensions inside and outside.

To help you avoid a similar experience I decided to share what I learned during my search for the best case to fit my scoped rifles.

My RECOMMENDATIONS

Below you will find both Double and Single rifle soft cases I believe represent the best quality, utility, and value.  Most of the products are available in different overall lengths and color options.

NOTE: Make sure and measure your rifle before ordering. Check the overall length and the widest section of your rifle and scope for the best fit without guessing.

I recommend that you allow approximately 2″ per each end on the length and 1 1/2″ per side on the height.

My Thoughts

Allen Co. makes some of the best moderately priced soft rifle cases for hunters currently available. Each model is thoughtfully designed for maximum functionality and overall utility. Available in 2 overall lengths of 48” and 52” that will accommodate most hunting rifles with optics.

These cases are water resistant but NOT waterproof or floatable.

If you are a hunter, you can’t go wrong with an Allen Co. purpose-built soft rifle cases!

 

 

 

My Thoughts

An outer height of 16 inches is plenty of room to fit an AR or tactical rifle with optics and handgrip, no problem! A

My Thoughts

The VooDoo Tactical is one of the best tactical double long rifle soft case available. Rugged ballistic pack cloth protects your rifle from rips and cuts. And plenty of padding so your optics won’t get knocked out of zero. Military style self-repairing zippers assure easy access to your weapon.

Three outside adjustable pouches will accommodate your magazines and other shooting gear while protecting them from the elements.

What is Your Intended Use?

You’re Intended Use Determines the Best Case for your Rifle and Scope!

Finding the best case for your rifle depends on the type of rifle you have and what you intend to do with your rifle. Obviously a person with a custom built $5,000 rifle and scope designed for precision long range competition has different requirements than the occasional hunter with a $400 off-the-shelf rifle and scope combo.

Soft Rifle Cases

Soft rifle cases or bags offer good protection for your rifle and scope while carrying, storing, or transporting as long as you are in control.  However, if you plan on using the airlines to travel and transport your firearm, you will need to opt for a TSA, Airline approved hard rifle case.

Soft rifle cases are easy to carry in the back of your SUV or behind the seat of your car or pickup. Because they are soft and flexible, they will fit in almost any space that’s large enough to accommodate them.

The biggest advantage of a soft shell case is they are much lighter than a hard-shelled rifle case.  And for those periods of time when you are not using your rifle, a soft case is excellent for storing your firearm.

TIP:  A good idea to help prevent moisture from condensing on your firearm is to first place it in a Silicone Treated Gun Sock.  It also adds an extra layer of padding while stored in your soft case.

Added Utility

Many soft rifle cases have pockets and compartments for carrying along your hearing and eye protection, magazines, ammo, and other gear. “Tactical” soft rifle cases typically have MOLLE (modular, lightweight load-carrying equipment) Grid strips sew on so you can add other MOLLE bags and cases. Most soft rifle cases have separate compartments for carrying along a pistol or two.

Some double soft rifle cases are equipped with shoulder straps for carrying your gear longer distances.

Soft Rifle Cases are a great choice as long as you are in control of the environment. They are dependent upon a thin skin and a layer of padding approx. 1/2″ thick to protect your rifle and scope. You can expect a good quality soft case to protect your rifle and scope from bumps, jars, and some heavy handling in general. Soft Rifle Cases are NOT TSA or Airline Compliant

If you plan on flying a soft rifle case will not work for you. They are NOT TSA compliant and simply will not protect your rifle and scope from the all-to-often heavy gorilla handling typically associated with the airline industry.

Soft rifle cases are a more economical option for toting and storing your scoped rifle. You can expect to pay from $25 for a basic hunting rifle soft case, all the way up to $175 for a tactical soft double rifle case.

Hard Rifle Cases

A quality hard case offers superior protection for your rifle and scope. If you own an expensive rifle and scope build and want the maximum protection your best option is a hard shell rifle case.

The best hard cases provide two barriers of protection for your rifle and scope: An outer shell made from molded plastic or aluminum protects your weapon from cuts and stabs. A layer of foam between the rifle and outer shell absorbs the energy from kinetic forces caused from blows, collisions, and dropping.

TSA, Airline Approved Hard Rifle Cases

A TSA Airline approved rifle hard case is designed to withstand the abuse of the airline baggage handling crew (in most cases; no pun intended).  And, all hard rifle cases that are TSA Airline approved are also lockable.

Protection Against the Elements

The top of the line hard shell rifle cases are gasketed between the lid and main body to form a hermetic seal impervious to dust or water infiltration. A one-way valve releases any pressure build up caused by heat increase or changes in altitude while flying.

Portability

Some hard cases are equipped with wheels making them more portable. Whether you are planning that once-in-a-lifetime hunting trip or heading out of town to a shooting competition, you will appreciate being able to pull your prized possession along instead of carrying it.

Hard rifle cases are heavy! Some can weigh up to 28 lbs. alone plus the rifle and scope making it too heavy or practical to carry very far. They are inflexible so they are more difficult to store or transport than a soft case.

Hard shell cases offer a superior option for storing your scope and rifle for extended periods of time. Top quality hard rifle cases typically cost from $100 for a basic model, all the way up to $300 for a TSA Airline Approved model with wheels.
